20 of 52 – The Good Food edition

If you saw the last post about a food truck, well here is it. Good Heavens Food Truck has some awesome food. Local beef, local pickles, local folks…delicious food.
The truck is on the corner of McLean and Madison and you will love what they have to offer.

I have eaten there a couple of times and I gotta say the Grindhouse Burger, The Rafe, the horchata, the Camilla…just go there and eat. I don’t know what to recommend, everything is so good and so fresh.

Memphis Made Brewing

There are so many good things about Memphis, and I could spend time naming them all, but I will talk about one thing in particular that is starting to create a big stir in town…beer.

I was able to meet up with the guys from Memphis Made Brewing Company and learn a little about their operation and the method behind the madness.

I was able to meet up with Andy, Drew, Alex and of course Stella (the cute dog) at the brewery and got to see how they get their brewing on.

Andy and Drew were born and raised in Memphis while Alex is from Washington State. Memphis Made is not only the beer, Memphis Made is what they are. Andy home-brewed during college, and then went on to work as a bartender for a while in London. Drew started brewing professionally in Ashville, NC. Eventually destiny would bring them together to start Memphis Made Brewing Company. Not even 2 months after entering the market, things started getting crazy; that’s when they added Alex to the mix, and continued the brewing magic.

So far they only have 12 accounts in Memphis. Most of their beers right now are “seasonal” beers. You can find Fireside Ninja at Sliders Inn. According to Drew, “right now we are just changing it up and bringing some different things to the market.”

I was able to try one of their beer not too long ago, Fireside Ninja, and I can honestly say that I really enjoyed it.

While I was there, they were brewing a coffee stout beer with coffee beans from a local roaster, Reverb Coffee; they roasted some beans specially for beer brewing.

If you want to try their beer, you should hit up some of these great local restaurants:

Aldo’s Pizza Pies
Bar DKDC
Bardog Tavern
Cash Saver (Midtown)
Celtic Crossing
Central BBQ (Central)
Central BBQ (Downtown)
Flying Saucer (Cordova)
Flying Saucer (Downtown)
The Growler Memphis
Tamp & Tap
The Slider Inn
Sweet Grass Next Door
Young Avenue Deli

Right now, they are a draft-only brewery, and the only two ways to get it are by the glass or by picking up a growler on the way home. You can also stop by and get one of the coolest shirts in town. I got one with their zip code 3810POUR.

Cemetery Walk

In my random walks around Memphis and the stuff I see around I went to the cemetery one morning. I went to Elmwood Cemetery.

This cemetery is very interesting. From the people that are buried there to the statues around the place.

In 1870 Elmwood became one of the oldest nonprofits in Tennessee. Since then, Elmwood Cemetery has become the final resting place to over 75,000 inhabitants including mayors, governors, madams, blues singers, suffragists, martyrs, generals, civil rights leaders, holy men and women, outlaws and millionaires.

Besides all the fun people underground here I love all the creepy statues. They do a tour for $10 that I will try soon so I can learn more about the cemetery.

My weakness…Crawfish

Well, having weekends off its pretty nice specially when there is fun stuff going on around town. Back home we don’t have crawfish but when I was introduce to it here in USA I fell in love when those tiny little not shrimp wanna be lobsters little creatures.

My friend Wes came along for the trip and we had a great time. We weren’t there for long but we were there long enough to grab a bucket of crawfish, enjoy some music and enjoy some crawfish/crayfish/mudbugs/crawdads or whatever you call them.

The past couple of weeks I have found things to do with the family and they all were free to do. You guys should check out the “Things to do this weekend” post on Fridays on the ILoveMemphis blog. It may just get your family out of the house and you never know, you can actually have fun. Get out and enjoy the pretty weather and even the great things in this city.

Choose901

If you do social media and Memphis stuff you probably know about @choose901 or even the facebook account for choose901 or even used the hashtag #choose901…I know I have.

This is an awesome organization that promotes Memphis. They just had their first birthday celebration at Huey’s but I wasn’t able to go.

The one thing I got to see and even try were some cookies that Chef Doty made to help promote them. I was at the Downtown Farmers Market and was able to try one of these awesome cookies.

The Best Ghost in Town

I can appreciate a great beer and in Memphis you can find a great variety of beer but there is one that I have fallen in love with and its Ghost River.

I had the opportunity to visit the brewery and take some pictures. Talked to Chuck Skypeck  and he gave me some really cool facts about the brewery. Chuck has been brewing for over 20 years in Memphis with Bosco’s but with Ghost River has been brewing for only 5 years, needless to say he knows his beer.

IMG_0613editlogo

Random Ghost River fact… this is the freshest beer on tap, it takes about 7 days from the beer being bottled up to being served at your favorite bar around town. They may have a small spot in downtown Memphis but they put out some serious beer, about 6000 barrels a year.

IMG_0621editlogo

The brewery only delivers to Shelby and DeSoto county. He tells me that for the upcoming events in Memphis they are creating some special beer. Some of the events are, beer week and Memphis in May. I won’t give much detail but by what Chuck told me they will have some great beer.

The have 3 beers that you can find all year long, Golden Ale (my favorite), Cooperhead Red and Glacial Pale Ale. They also have some seasonal beers, such as, Black Magic (Feb-Apr), Witbier (May-Aug), Oktoberfest (Sept-Oct) and 1887 IPA (Nov-Feb). I am making a point to try their seasonal beers and I am looking forward to Beer Week to see what they have up their sleeve.

You guys know how we do this, support your local brewery. Ghost River Brewery is local and is here to stay.

Burger Festival

This was a fun filled weekend. On Sunday we got to got the Best Memphis Burger Festival. I got to talk or tweet back and forth with @BestMemBurger to get some info about the festival. Super nice guy and really cool blogger. I met him at the festival for a quick picture.

There were so many vendors and grilling guys trying to show off there burger creations. One of the coolest things was that it was a free event but you had to donate money to try the burgers, the money donated went to the Mid-South Spay & Neuter Services. I was able to try a couple and they were pretty tasty.

You can check out the winners on their blog, just click here.

I also have some more photos on my facebook page

Muddy Luv

Since 2010 Habitat for Hope has been putting together a race… a 5K…LUVMUD. I was actually off work for this year’s race, it was a beautiful thing. The fact that you can see so many people get together, run and get down and dirty for a good cause was just amazing.

The race benefits Habitat for Hope’s mission, “to support, serve, and care for families facing the serious or long-term illness of a child“.
You guys know the deal, check out their website, support your local charities and volunteer every chance you get.
You can see more photos from LUVMUD on my facebook page.
